Set Other Smiles Free

by Thomas K. Hunt

It’s been too many miles since I lost my way
As the years flew by, I missed it every day
I remember the day my smile strayed
I was always hoping it would come back to stay
I searched and searched until my hair turned gray
Then I went and lost my own way
I caught some glimpses, but their smiles turned to frowns
I stay away when they’re turned upside down
It’s hard to collect smiles when you can’t smile back
You need a smile to get a smile, and that’s a natural born fact

Then one day when I wasn’t looking, a beautiful smile just appeared
It was such a beautiful girlish grin stretching from ear to ear
A modern-day Euphrosyne that threw her smile at me
It wasn’t like any other smile that I had ever seen
I felt my face curl up as she was smiling straight at me
I knew right there and then that this was meant to be
She was the one that finally smiled at me
She found my smile and set it free
Since that day our smiles have stayed
We put them on at the beginning of the day
They’re right there when we close our eyes to dream
Her loving smile glows in the night as she dreams next to me

We love to go out and wear our smiles
Side by side, we wear them in style
There are so many that love to smile back
We now know for smiles they will never lack
We love to collect smiles; it’s our business of the day
We throw ours out there and watch so many come our way
When she smiles at you; you will clearly see
All you need is your smile to set other smiles free
