Wotton under Edge

by Richard Vince

We made time and space because
We wanted to; could you have
Done the same, or was too much
Of your life occupied to
Accommodate a stranger like me?

Perhaps I had my answer
The following day, when the miles were
Too many, the hours too long to fit
Inside the confines of your day,
It seems. Perhaps you saved us both
In the way so many have done and
I have always failed to do.

Ten years on, I wish you had been
A friend for life instead of just for
An evening, but it has taken me
All that time to get here, so
Ten years ago was too early.

Now I find that the follies of
My trusting heart have left me
Missing the friends I have failed
To make, to keep, to be a friend to,
And that is why I miss you.

If, by some slim chance,
You remember me too, I hope
It is not for the same reason.
May your life today be one to enjoy
Rather than one to rebuild.
