Uckfield

by Richard Vince

It must have been summer:
The evening was long, and
London Bridge was not
The maelstrom I expected.

It must have been before;
But after, I began to wonder
If it had always been
Like this, if the laughter
Hid behind my back before
It exploded in my face.

It must have been wonderful,
But my memory retains
Very little apart from
That initial climb and
The frenzied dash that
Followed.

It must have been worthwhile,
And so it is yet another time,
Yet another place that must
Be reclaimed from the cesspit
Into which I let too many
Drag me.
