Rochdale

by Richard Vince

It’s been a long time since
I last moved in such circles;
Since the world was my
Oyster whose shell I could
Open as I wished.

Somewhere old, somewhere new:
I found the perfect combination
Just before my home shrank
To exclude somewhere else
Entirely.

What I miss is less distance
And more time: long days
To get lost in while always
Knowing where I am,
Hours spent rather than passed.

When I am able once again
To take the long way round,
Take the slow train, I know
Where I will spend the day
Not going.
