Interlaken

by Richard Vince

Finally I found my way to
The shore, but the river
Showed me it was merely
A temporary respite.

Through plate glass windows
I could see that it
Flowed into another lake.

Little did I know how much
Deeper and wider that one
Would be; how much energy
I would spend trying to
Swim, just trying to stay
Afloat, head above water,
Nose in breathable air.

There was plenty more
Downstream, it turned out:
I have long since left
The mountains for the sweeping
Plains that form a horizon
Worthy of the name.

The vast ocean is almost
In sight, no longer impossibly
Distant, and I no longer
Fight the current, gravity,
The inevitability of the sea.
