redefine: reflection

by Aaron Michael

you hold a mirror up like
it should be, lighting your features
but the shadows etched between the
lines of red scars and shattered pieces
from a thousand different battles
draw your attention like gravity

inexorable
immutable
inequitable
but ultimately
invalid

i want to be a reflection
of the kindness and
of the way you hold your breath
in anticipation
and the fearlessness of your desire.
i wish to turn to glass and mercury
so you can see where the truth in your face resides

just out of your vision
just beyond the restraint of all
your injured pieces
buried inside the scars
caused by an evil you can't remember
but looks like me and me and me

i only want to angle you comfortably
carry those scars into oblivion
remind you of beauty and that you
can hold it between your fingertips
without fear of it
without without within without
even without me

inevitably
irreplaceably
enviously and
peacefully

because you only forgot it for a moment
but it is on the edges of you
to pluck off the earth when
it is time.
