mom

by Jolie Jordan

I always liked lemons
over sugar, anyway.

Give me something sweet
and my lips sour up,
and pull away.

I watch the rain in the street.

I watch my friends make friends
with cocaine. I watch my momma
make peace
with the love of her life,
making a new life.
She’s an angel.

Not of this world.
Someone who still
believes that what should be,
should be.

But what should be
ain’t ever what it should be,
is it.

And I throw out my jacket
in the street to protect her,
all the same.

The truth of this hits me square on the nose, must be why I am crying... I also prefer lemons over sugar but for me, it's the squeeze that plunges down onto a buttery crepe already dusted with powder... my friends ditched cocaine for good weed. But your mom makes me feel something new... thanks!
