Fire

by Richard Vince

She danced to the flames,
You said, firelight making
Silent music on her
Shining monochrome body.

She danced for the flames,
You said, petitioning the pyre
Of her life that had gone
Before, her life that was
No longer hers.

She danced with the flames,
You said, forming answers
To all of the questions
She never knew to ask
In the shapes of her arms.

She danced like the flames,
You said, syncopated rhythms
Forming a single entity that
Is still somehow many.

She danced in the flames,
You said, heart finding words
Purified beyond language
Into knowledge, understanding,
End, beginning, the very
Essence of her self.
