Midnight Sun, part 1: Rhode Island

by Richard Vince

There is a map in my heart
Of all the places I saw only
In the dark…but it is
Of a state I’ve never been in
With a name that means more
And less to me than it should.

My wandering feet had stepped
Into technically tomorrow,
But my homebound head was
Stuck in the real thing,
Lines blurred separating
Reality from fantasy, day from
Night and all that lies between.

Half a lifetime later, my days
Have beginnings and ends and
Middles in between, but
Sometimes they still fail to
Come one after the other.

It is in the unintended overlap
That my memories live:
Things I never did, places I never
Saw, and all the other differences
Between who I was then
And who I have become.
