Stationary

by Richard Vince

Sometimes the best way to move
Is to stay still and let
The world move past you.

People pass beneath a gently
Fading sky, and so I see
A different scene even though
I remain in the same place.

Perhaps this is how I change
In other people’s eyes:
By continuing to be defiantly
Me, in spite of everything
And everyone else.

(My home was not a
Small town, but neither was it
A big city: I was blessed
With a happy medium in which
To find my feet, to find
The person I was always
Determined to be.)

My greeting dies in my throat:
To them, I will always be
The past, and so I turn away,
Choosing to stay in the present
And face the future.
