Conflation by Brian Francis
The clouds drift across the sky dropping down
into the valley and building in density
and darkness. A hurricane they say, from
the distant ocean, found itself in Mexico.
So, it moved to the north invading the US.
Fences and walls could not stop it as it moved
inexorably north to find itself sinking into the Tucson valley,
To hide among the American clouds stealing their thunder
Causing flooding and discontent.
Our desert drinks greedily all that flows across it, or
into its arroyos, racing along toward the rivers to gather --
unity. That unity bestowing power to its transformative might
careening toward gravity’s pull.
The desert’s children smiling embrace the rains,
standing open-armed receiving its caresses
which, tingle upon our being;
shivers sing a crescendo.
It is a shame -- now, we all have wet backs.
