redefine: rat race by Aaron Michaelthe items eyes don't always perceive
add up to the gaps
that intuition fills
these invisible stepping stones
guide while we focus on the mundane
rather than the preternatural
letting imagination die
for more useful qualities
the ones that are marketable
and safe
and appreciated by the largest number
further we walk
watching the person our inner child would
be proud of wander into city streets
in pursuit of necessity
in suits and skirts and shame
for allowing the world to dictate dreams to themselves.
the slick stone surfaces of intuition
are oft the tumble taken
into the incessant and indefinite
where sadness wields the weapon
we gave it to finish the job
that we did on the lame horse
a broken leg ends the races
and returns us to the tunnels we
didn't choose
the ones constructed to control
to coerce and to connive
and we grow in ways that
won't be accommodated
because dreams are free of denomination and deductibles.
