Never Forever

by Richard Vince

Perhaps it was not really paradise
If I was always looking for a way out,
A path back to something approaching
My previous life.

After so many years suffering today
For a tomorrow that never seemed to
Get any closer, perhaps we should have
Realised that we were merely
Chasing a dream rather than building
A new, better reality.

To want something to last forever,
You must want it to continue
To exist; to be as it already is.
To want someone forever, you must
Truly believe there will never be
Someone you want more.

Even at my least unhappy, I never
Stopped looking for somewhere I would
Rather be, a better home for my heart
Than the one that never
Truly accommodated it.

All the time we spent looking for ways
To a better life was wasted: we remained
Determined to look outwards instead
Of looking at each other and seeing
The answers that were always there,
Lurking just behind our eyes.
