A Flag Draped Casket

by Brian Francis

They laid him in the center of the great room
With soldiers standing guard at all hours
Almost silent came the crowds to walk by him
To honor him, his gentle heart, fierce devotion

He was first among the people his fellow citizens
They raised him up to lead them the highest office
he bowed low with humility raising the nation’s soul
His moral strength allowed other nations to follow

A path of mourning, marble floor and the teardrops
A moment of pause to bow one’s head say a prayer
contemplate his noble service without reservation
his friendly kindness with that joyful gleam in his eyes

His service from wars ravages to diplomatic finesse
Made him a leader, personal humility made him great
Now with his loss we remember the statesman he was
A shining example of what the best of America can be
