The Bladensburg Cross by Brian Francis
Forty-nine men gave it their all
They lay in their graves far away
Forty-nine soldiers fell to death’s pall
marked by a white cross on their grave
Found nearby their childhood homes
The community erected a stone
Placing their names in a prominent place
They honored and remembered their own
Years have passed and their graves far away
Are still tended with great care and respect
But at home where their mothers would pray
Is now threatened by a government’s neglect
Words and symbols once embraced with pride
Are endowed with a treacherous intent
And people who nurture resentment inside
Beg the courts to declare it illegitimate
