It is hard to appreciate
What makes you happy when
You have always been told
It is not good enough.

A previous version of me
Remained convinced that
There must be something he was
Missing, despite all the evidence.
How much youthful energy
Was wasted, looking for
Something that was never there?

Perhaps growing up is
Finding joy in all that
We are led to believe is
Sad; trading everyone else’s
Expectations for our own.
