Party Apologies

by Matthew Zangen

I shore the ballast of your oldest absence
against a perseverating mess of questions,

I'd best not mention our best is in essence
all our worst worn tensions,

at least a restitute fallacy tests the senses.

Never bet on your intentions.
Let the neighbors build better fences,
they say, bless all guests who stay,

who dare not mention
perseverence is our lesson,
lest we forget

this prescience fought our first pretension:
fondness grows on an absent heart's attention.
