Living Room

by Richard Vince

This is where I came when I had
Nowhere else to go; where I began
Too many jaded days.

Suddenly, I was a lonely old man
Whose first conversation of the day
Was across a bar.

After years of edits, I had
Finally written myself out
Of my own life. After years of
Threats, I had finally thrown
Myself out of my own home.

This is where I found refuge:
A way to begin the day with
A hearty breakfast and
An almost friendly face.

Even though I had to share it
With strangers, it was my space:
Somewhere I could let my mind expand;
The only place where I could
Be myself; my only home in a world
Of outstayed welcomes.
