Outside

by Richard Vince

The need for fresh air took me
Outside, to find the opposite;
To rediscover an old skill
With a potential new friend.

In the end, I could only go back
The way I had come: yet another
Road out of town turned out
To be a cul de sac; yet another
Friendship over before it began.

The real need, though I did not
Know it then, was for escape.
My life had slowly shrunk
Around me, forming an invisible
Cage without a door.
When I thought I was leaving it,
I merely took it with me.

All dawns were false;
All possibilities were illusory;
All good things came to an end.
All potential was transformed
Instantaneously into regret.

My gaze slowly lowered from
Horizon, via ever closer scenery,
To my feet. While I looked
Down, were there any eyes
Looking for me?
