one by one

by Anya Kaats

i realize now
that we are built
to crack.
like old tree bark and
frozen lakes under spring sunlight.

our hearts
are whole.
deep canyons of love
and grief,
waiting to be released
and refilled.

why do we run?
happy tears should teach us
that it's all one in the same.
every answer
to every question,
the deepest and
most meaningful of lessons
they live within our veins,
soaked in blood
and in everything
that gives us life.

like crystals inside rocks,
rewards for enveloping ourselves
in the fullness
of everything we fear most.

i wonder what it will take,
whether this was the plan all along.
the coral glows
before it dies.
“save me,” it screams.
why do we give ourselves
permission to look away?

all that we love
will be taken.
our bodies, ravaged by disease.
encounters with the white light,
the waters continue to rise.
by one.
it’s happening faster now,
can you tell?

what if we let the salt burn our face,
let it harden
within in the wrinkles
around our eyes.
is it time to step off the cliff now?
to trust in the darkest
of truths?
when do we let the light of the moon,
the buzz of the hummingbird
and the meeting of planets in the sky
breath us back to life?

hope is not a belief,
but faith is.

mantra-worthy lines, your insight is a quickening--my consolation is even time swallows faith, hope, and belief...wholly.Thanks for this poem!
