The Not-Quite-Full Moon

by Meghan Helmich

How must the moon feel on a night like this,
not quite full but certainly not empty?
Anxious about future expectations?
When the moon is full,
all the silver that must be smoothed over
the peering faces and the winking windows.
The many ghost-eye trees that must have an eye
glowing through the Spanish moss.
Will there be clouds to wear?
Sleeveless or turtleneck parades in the sky?

But for not-quite-now, the moon is not quite full,
and hanging quite high
despite any anxieties that may be developing.

...times like these it is best to remember the moon is always borrowed light
