The Promise Met by Brian Francis
Let me tell you why I love America
and it ain't just because I'm free
nor is it the mountains or the valleys
or any amazing thing from sea to sea
A nation isn't the dirt and stone
found rising above the waters edge
nor is it the monuments or great cities
but instead it is the people's pledge
the words of our founding fathers
written carefully for posterity's sake
Binds us in the brotherhood of nation
a powerful bond we will never break
So, when we are in our darkest hours
when worry joins fear suffering calamity
a hand can always be found to grasp
because of our national humanity
Sure we spit and stutter at each other
while we struggle with the moment's brawl
but when danger calls there is always hope.
A fellow citizen will be found standing tall
and while some will choose to find advantage
many others will meet needfulness with love
a simple smile to heal the mind's sure pains
or to join in ecumenical prayer to God above
I've stood before our nation's great monuments
and walked her bloody fields of discontent
studied the nation's story - how we've endured
Precisely how the fore-fathers had meant
Now that we've made such a great headway
through the storms and strife of history's light
Still holding to our promise of liberty for all
mindful always of our unity's great might
