Contempt by Brian Francis
You don't like my darkness
it makes you realize my pain
All of the lessons of a lifetime
contained in one brain
all of the betrayals, and failures,
broke promises and lies
you can't stand the reflection
that you see in my eyes
In school I could have made
a more diligent attempt
but the teachers only inspired
a sort of self-contempt
students indifferent to
the black board or book
gain the torment of insult
or of the degrading look
And college another
little conformity club
teaching lessons unneeded
where making money's the rub
and debt the beginning
and end of it all
the drowning the gasping
the dragging the crawl
I don't have the conviction
to pretend life's a gas
to smile and act jolly
it seems i'm too crass
I don't have the strength
to pretend I'm OK
with the things that you do
and the things that you say
But the nice thing about it
when it's all done and over
we will each find our end
under the clover
