Mama Told Me About You - A Sonnet

by Meghan Helmich

So, yes, I know better but here I sit
taking your calls and wanting to give
my love and my heart, every last bit
missing you making me want to live.

While you've been away, my heart was breaking
thinking about your lips on her skin.
I tore at myself, an end in the making
and wondered why this had to begin.

And now you're sorry and love's a burning flame
you say you know that I'm hurting.
But your voice is steady and your words are the same
And with heartache I feel that I'm flirting.

I'm all alone and, boy, I still love you,
Oh, and this hell I'm willing to go through.
