Last Breath

by James Zealy

Waltzing through our day to day
Presence that fills an empty room
With a bouncing energy displayed
Appeasing any sense of gloom

Game play mind scores perfect
Response from her entourage
Populated by her family sect
Bound by skilled brain massage

Training the untrainable
Was a chess match of wills
Her fiery black tipped sable
Coat gleams of pure resolve steel

Whose simple joy, a water ball
Was the key that unlocked her legs
While I attempted to walk
Her on a lead I kept on a peg

She would vex and tease
Migrating under objects
To many to count to appease
Her will to control all subjects

Balanced with furry slippers
She pranced her way
Into her domain where no peers
Dared challenge her sway

Or risk the snarl and Elvis lear
That kept all in her court
Obedient to her will made clear
By her intimidating snort

Like a cat she escaped many times
The waiting scythe of the reaper
Her lives multiplied 9 times 99
Each time returning to her keeper

She had run out of lives
Her paths to escape did not matter
Desire now only to survive
Pain emitted for each paw patter

Her will to stay kept her upright
Even through the anguished cries
Meant it was time for her sight
To stop, limp body wide open eyes

I left the vet in tears
Missing that impossible imp
On our deck at home peered
A rippling lake calling simply

To A curved tail a lion shaped head
Peacefully calling out to me
Not sure if my grieving soul sped
My mind to see her past that tree

Where the sun shone bright
The water was peaceful
Where she seemed right
And she was now at ease

Well I'm certainly glad you wrote this one. I've had dogs my whole life and found them to be more genuine than a lot of people I've, except most poets. I've got two in the house right now who sleep with us every night!! Take care.
