Haikus About Us

by Meghan Helmich

I never thought you'd
look at me that way but those
eyes turned toward me.

As soon as she looked
away, our eyes were busy
making love and smiles.

And then she was gone,
And you were mine, a friend said.
You had always been.

You were inside me
that night, after the movie.
Both made me cry out.

Then I was yours, love.
And they teased us without end.
But we didn't mind.

You whispered at night
how in love with me you were,
how I'd be your wife.

There was a ring, too.
I admit I purchased it,
cheap, but so pretty.

I wanted to be
the mother of your baby.
We tried many times.

But Fate kept my womb
empty, and sent you on your
way. You left me there.

You went back to her
though she left you high and dry.
Guess you needed it.

At least I am not
Alone - and also with child.
My heart's room to grow.

Now I have a ring
that is so beautiful but
leaves my finger dark.

Wow...a wealth of emotion throughout this and it's striking how each part stands on its own, capturing so much...then moves forward to the next piece of the story...so much in this...going back to read again now....
