6/1/17

by Meghan Helmich

This year's June is fresh-faced
and her freckles are dark after a day in the sun.
Her siblings stay to themselves
in their sweat houses, concentrating on the passing days.
But precious June, with her daylight
fading and warm nights
without breezes. The trees don't move in her presence.
Strange constellations blink above and
look down on her slow activities.
In the past there were games and kids and laughter
but now she dwells over the realm of reveries and tears.
She watched him leave, she sleeps alone tonight,
and closes her eyes against the street light
that goes on and off overhead.
