Unknown Masterpiece

by Thomas K. Hunt

I'd love to write a masterpiece
Something that stays with the mind
Something new, a brand new find
Something that will stick in your head
Something more than special
Something that I said

I'm hoping that I leave a mark
Something you'll feel in your heart
Worth the read, and every word is true
Remember me
I'll never forget you

It's hard to find the perfect words
Something you haven't already heard
They'll be the truth between two
They'll be the meaning of me and you

When the words finally come
You'll finally know that I am the one
Read my words and feel my heart
Together forever
Never to part

I need to write a masterpiece
I hope I'm not too late
Just a little something that can't be missed
Where everyone can relate

See me on the cover of the NY Times
Something about reading rhymes
The right words avoid me all the time
They all hide in the back of my mind

I simply write what comes to mind
This happens all the time
Smile in the sunshine and cry in the rain
Trust in the comfort to take away the pain
Reach for a hand
There's one next to you
Care for each other
It's the right thing to do

I need to write a masterpiece
About the river and an autumn breeze
Smiles flood the river in between the tall pine trees
The gentle crackle when you step on leaves
The smell of wood smoke under a star-filled sky
You're where you are for a thousand reasons why

It's times like these that I can't find the words
It doesn't matter what you've heard
I'm getting to think it's quite obscure
What's a masterpiece?
I'm not sure

Is there such a thing as a word thief?
If there is, he's robbed me blind
I've searched everywhere
There are no words that come to mind
This is just one of those times
there are no words to find

I'd love to write a masterpiece
Something that will stick in your head
Something to read in bed
Something to read after I'm dead
