Phantom

by Richard Vince

When I saw a ghost, did you
See one too? Or was my
Suddenly breathless puzzlement
Merely reflected in your glasses
That could have been hers?

Her blonde hair was a
Red herring, that most
Incomprehensibly piscine of
Metaphors. You were likewise:
An unwelcome distraction
Drawing my eyes from
What they should be seeing.

This is touching. A little bit of heartbreak and regret, but also there's an unspoken acknowledgement of a need to moving on. Brief for you, but it works really well.
