The Promise

by Thomas K. Hunt

I woke up in the morning one year ago today
I promised myself I'd buy a ukulele
I'd been thinking about it for quite some time
But that morning, it bounced around in my mind
I was going to buy that ukulele
I was going to teach myself how to play
That's just what I did one year ago today

I bought myself a ukulele
I sat down and tried to play
I bought myself a ukulele
I've been picking at this uke all day

This just came to mind, so I'll say what I say
I picked up some chords, and I began to play
I was amazed I made it sound that way
I was making music
It was making my day

I played all day until my fingers were sore
I'd lay it down then pick it up for more
I've found a partner until this journey ends
I've just purchased a lifelong friend

I play if for me
I'll play it for you
Only if you want me to
I carry my tunes on four little strings
When you see it, you'll know what I mean

I let my fingers dance as I strum away
Remembering the hurt from that first day
I've come a very long way
I play the ukulele every day

I bought my second ukulele today
I bought it with some money I saved
I sat right down and played and played
I'll take my ukuleles to the grave

Right out of the package, I was blown away
I had to sing
I had nothing to say
A little bit can go a long way
I updated my uke today

I'll play for you if you want me to
Name a song
We'll all sing along
This new uke is sounding just right
On my first ukulele's 1st birthday tonight

My ukuleles are with me all the time
Echoing chords that complete my rhymes
I knew what I was doing one year ago today
I was keeping a promise that I made
