a piece of glass

by Jared Fladeland

My heart is a piece of glass
Floating on the ocean.
It drifts in the infinite,
Battered by the definite
Shapes of disappointments,
Loss, and the cosmic pining
For that one who waits just beyond the horizon.

You were the tsunami that sent me
Adrift, and I’m still waiting for a clear night
Alone with the constellations
To track my course.

I’m waiting for a sign from the moon, and the sun,
To know which direction will bring me home
But I’m left to the whims
Of the rolling tides.
Looking up on the moodiness of clouds,
I see your face in their shapes,
And I want to sing
The greatest lullabies
This world has ever heard,
But the music is drowned out
By the sound of the ocean,
Trying its best
To sink the fractured remains
Of this glass organ
Struggling to beat
Inside my chest.
