contemplation

by Kimberly Bare

The years stop for no one

we don’t notice
as each minute is filled
with our mundane tasks

the business of living
cannot be interrupted with
such nonsense of savoring the moments
and storing memories

thin and fragile are these sentiments
when faced with the concrete truths of survival

lost and unfulfilled
we forge on in the hope of creating a better existence
while never experiencing the present

and then one day we realize
the years stop for no one
