the RIVER and the TORCH

by Racquel Cervantes

I walk in the dark of night
stars dimly lit above me
scores of pinpoints scattered across the sky

in my hand, a torch
a roaring flame emanating
from the wood pressed against the palm
of my hand and fingers

i wield this wild light
lighting the way before me
as i walk alongside
a creeping river

silently gliding across
jagged rocks, forming its own ways
creating its own paths

it branches off this way
and that way
and back again
never forcing
but still making its way through

following the natural law
of gravity
yet never bending
from its own true nature

i come to the end of my path
i see the vastness of the land before me
the stars raised even higher in the sky
i fall to my knees
thrown deep into prayer
whispered with all that i am
