Biology by Richard VinceThis is the dark side of me:
Eyes that see not the passage of time,
Hands that remember like it was
Yesterday, feet that still feel
The uneven pavements of sepia days.
It is an unending war of attrition.
Others give in, allow themselves to be
Pulled back, pulled down, pulled under.
I stand firm, but fear I will
Someday capitulate, abandon all
My principles, become someone I despise.
It was impossible then, but it
Would be too easy now.
Well chosen words, delivered by
A silver tongue; attention to
One who craves it.
Temptation is strongest when
Summer comes to coax them
From shade into sunshine.
On the surface I am fine, but
This is a deep imperative,
An ancient inscription on
The very essence of man, something
Beyond which we have somehow
Failed to evolve.
It is not their fault, but
Nor is it mine; it is simply
My responsibility to ensure that
The better part of me keeps
My basest desires at bay.

I do know this allowing to be pulled back in, because the safety of what's known can outweigh the need to pierce the darkness alone...I have felt and am feeling that. |
