Moving On

by Richard Vince

The rain has stopped for you now:
Clearing skies and stilted summer sunshine
Guide you to somewhere beautiful,
While I enjoy the light they cast on
This new life I am living.

May you always have the weather
You wish for, with no unwelcome clouds
To cast long shadows, or glaring sunlight
To disturb your peaceful slumbers.

Our paths always seemed like asymptotes,
And now I know it is true. We curve
Gently away from one another,
Looking in different directions, eyes
Seeing the same world in different ways.

You remain where you are, where you
Have always been, while I depart as air,
The transience of my adulthood resuming
After appearing permanently paused.

This is somewhere I always looked for you:
Scanning the room on entry, hoping to meet
Your breathtakingly dark eyes and
Unfailingly friendly smile. Even at
The point of parting, you were perfect:
I did not feel the pang of rejection,
Only gladness at having known you at all.

My days continue not to contain you,
As they were always meant to be,
Lush trees replacing my old view of
Your ever inviting house.

When the lamp clicks off behind
Venetian blinds, I am no longer there
To see it. I hope that what remains in
The temporary darkness will always be
Your contented face and sleepy eyes,
Smiling at the thought of the days to come.
