Sunset

by Richard Vince

We always tried to avoid the Sun, but
Now I seek it: I need to bask in its
Life giving beauty, let it chase away
The descending darkness, feel its constance
In a time of uncertainty.

When there is a plan, the best decisions
Are already made; when there is no plan,
Making the best decisions does not matter.
I have found the unhappy medium:
None of the options is ever good;
I constantly wonder whether there is
Something better.

If I knew I was ahead, perhaps I could
Quit. Instead, I stay, paralysed,
Rooted to the spot by the fear
That anywhere else is even worse.

The Sun is beginning to set, but
This day will not end: I will
Relive it tomorrow, and the next day,
And the next, and every day until
I finally find the courage to seek
A new day.
