1945

by Curtis Sethaler

Your smile used to be nuclear
It used to light up the room like
Manhattan did the desert
In an age long forgotten
Called 1945

You used to radiate joy
And I'd be caught up in the midst of it
I remember the look you had
When the world was all right

I remember a time
When the weight was off both of us
When the life we were living
Was something we could bear

We used to talk for hours
We would talk about nothing
But the tension is high now
And the words just won't come

We're walking on eggshells
Forty stories high up on wires
And we're not very good gymnasts
I could never walk a straight line

We're both so different now
But hopeful, I love you
And I know we'll be stronger
But right now this moment
It's all I can bear

I love you, I love you
And I'll love you forever
And I'll be better I promise
It's just
Building strength takes some time.
