Playground Love

by Aaron Blair

We got married in a park
where I used to play as a child.
We would drive there with my sister's boyfriend,
who used to beat her, but she thinks
it was only because he saw our father do it.
I am less likely to be kind to his memory,
or any of my own, even of playgrounds,
but we had to get married somewhere,
and maybe those men and their fists
helped me realize I could not settle
for anyone less than you.
I broke my face on a slide once.
On another slide, I broke my leg.
Maybe I'm destined to spend my life,
falling from one disaster to the next,
but I'm pretty sure that if you don't catch me,
it will never be because you didn't try.
