Poems for my son #4

by Johanna May

Today I stared at you fascinated,
While you tentatively swayed
To a nursery song
Of a girl and a cat
Or a girl and a duck
The innocence of it all
Lulls me, charmed at the bevy
Of animals that would have munched each other
If placed side to side in real life
But because its your childhood
The world is all friends
In your season it is fangless
And even toys I get you
Presents you a cozy promise of a cheerful pastel life
But the world will changes gradually for you
Little by little the surface peels off---
The scab of the wound
The wound that is home
The home that is all wrong
Like the wacky home the bears in one of your shows built
Where they invited the wolves
And the lions
And not a lamb trembled

Yes. I hadn't thought of it like this before, but. Yes.
