On Becoming the Insignificant Other

by Alison McKenzie

At the first sign of trouble,
She gathers the facts
And tries to make some
Semblance of sense.

His fear has been building,
Causing his nightmares
To reign ash
Upon the light
Of his days,
Those precious moments
He craves,
Clutching
Love to death,
Squeezing to strangulation.

She tries not to die,
Because she knows
It isn’t his intention,
But the lights go out
Just the same.

I admire the craft with which you built this piece...it's so powerful...just goes right into your reader's heart...

I'm sure I've been in this position but I don't believe I've ever seen it so sublimely expressed, Alison.
