If We Only Knew How (to Speak the Truth)

by Alison McKenzie

The necklace you never gave me
Weighs heavy in the box
Where you've hidden it
Under the bed we used to share.

I can see the guilt,
The ungiven gift,
Strangling the light from your eyes,
The smiles you don,
The gash in the veil
That lets through
Truth.
