Ten Thousand Steps

by Kenneth Lau

ten thousand steps
to a healthier life.
ten thousand steps
squishing my hurt into the pavement
waiting for a phone call
ten thousand steps a day
where my mind can wander and plot
and be free of the sinkhole my heart has fallen into
where my dreams can take shape
where wounds open and close
where anger dissipates in the paths curves
where i run upstream along the river
the sun burns off my failures
drowns me in the sweat of success
where i can't becomes i can
i can ten more steps
i can twenty more steps
I can a thousand more steps and beyond
where 10,000 steps equals 4.8 miles and
every time i see the ten thousand step marker i want to hurl it into the water
for telling me to stop short

If this were an ad for one of those step counters, I'd be a lot more likely to buy one.

By which I mean, this is honest and great for it. Really enjoyed.
