Reverberation by Brian Francis
The darkness tingles,
its thick tepid presence
oppressive without even
the slightest inclination of a breeze.
Sounds reflect a dull sort of echo
that seem to penetrate
deep into your being.
A trickle just nearby
spilling over a pebble or a stone.
The unseen, the unheard
are the greatest danger.
The moments from the past
Those which carry memories--
memories better left unrecalled.
It is funny
they all have their own little whiskers
a sound, a tone, a smell, or taste
enough to trigger the moment again.
Some –
the trips to the ice cream parlor
with the family – just a kid.
a real blast from the past.
But the others the darker ones
the ones that cause a tremor
through your being
the ones where you are all alone
and once again clawing at reality
then fighting to avoid it
now to maintain a perspective.
