1501

by Richard Vince

Perhaps you are destined to be
The one that got away. Then, I was
Distracted by fleeting beauty and the
Unknown promise of hypocrisy; now,
I am ruled by money, and weather, and
That old need to be alone.

You are a constant reminder, when I
Remember, of how subjective beauty is.
There are times when I feel like
I am out of step with the rest
Of the world; like I see everything at
Right angles to everyone else.

If I wanted to feel alone, my wish
Is granted. Even when I am as
Distracted as everyone else, it is
Not by the same things.

This time, it is by knowing that
You have gone to my world while
I have gone to yours; I must stop
Making a habit of this. It is remembering
You passing me by while I looked
The other way, my gaze drawn by
A face I forgot long ago.

Perhaps you are destined to be
The one that got away; or perhaps
I will catch up with you in
Later life, when distractions are fewer
And I can savour every moment like
I could never have done back then.

A poignant view of missed romance. But never without hope.
