Nothing Before Me, Nothing Behind

by JJ Johnson

At daybreak I woke from a dread-filled dark dream
Opening my eyes to infinite nothing
Feeling my way to the light switch on my wall
The sound of the click was momentary relief
As the glow of the bulb revealed more darkness to me
Than I had ever seen before or behind
A blanket of black entrapped the shape of my hands
Cloaking the image in the mirror that looked back at me
With eyes as wide open as my own though lacking perception
Sensing motion in darkness, seeing waves of cold wind
Carrying smoke so thick it choked my thoughts dry
Till I could not quench this thirst with all of the tears from each eye
Cried in blindness in a mind without light
Without a glimmer of hope or a shadow of white
What terrible curse has stolen a visionaries' site?
Turning the morning's sunrise into an endless midnight
Even my once vivid memory of your beautiful face
Has faded to shackles of black leather and lace
Blindfolds of satin appear covering these eyes
Clearly this dream became a nightmare of lies
Where rainbows once rose to shower on me
Now vacant your once sparkling gaze
In a mind full of one color
There is nothing to see

Dark and pessimistic this poetry of lost relationship.
