Box Elder

by Leonard M Hawkes

Driven like beasts
We "end up . . . ."
Convinced through our modernity
That "place" is insignificant.

Even religion dictates
"Spirit" over "Place"--
"Bloom," so they say,
"Where you are planted."

--For fifteen years
I have nurtured that Catalina geranium:
Fed it, watered it, pruned it,
Brought it in from the frost,
And it never will be at home--

Nor would I be
Beyond these desert hills.
