my nursing career

by Gail Wolper

i didn't give the pills on time
it was an accident of course
she grew tall to the ceiling
and then she grew small

when i was late to the procedure
there were other
small embaressments
suggested by her
test tube of refinement

when you said spinal tap
she understood emergency
i comprehended so much more
for you had asked me
to
assist
afterwords

and what a night it was~
i never felt the surgery
you couldnt lose
that shit eating grin
you couldnt lose
that shit eating grin
you couldnt

how beautiful it was
you feeling me up
between patient physicals
me, cleaning wounds,
wrapping bandages
diplaying my
decollete'

in the end
it was so sad
the patient died
albeit painlessly
we couldnt save
what was never ours

my career never found
that final
exit it was
stage left
so very very
far
from my intention
