Lost and Found

by Ken Harnisch

I misplaced my wallet this morning
Lost my keys this afternoon
I have a problem remembering
The name of my boss’s wife
But I’ve never, ever forgotten you

You had a veil of soft brown hair
And eyes that reflected light like
Smoked jade. Your eyes brows had
A way of intersecting darkly when
You were angry and the tears you
Formed in your eyes always seemed
Like pearls. When you needed me to
Hold you you could be such a little girl,
But then, when I needed you to keep me sane
You were the wisest woman I ever knew.
You sang on key and scrunched your ears
When I thought I could do the same.
You stepped in front of angry boys and
Wrestled a jackknife from one of my
Jealous friends. I used to look on in
Unspoken amazement at the way boys
And men would watch you as they
Pretended to pass idly by. You were
The only person I ever knew who could
Walk with me and stay by my
Daddy Long legs side. You cried when
You moved away, tears I couldn’t manage
For a long, long time.

I found my wallet in my dungarees
My keys were squeezed between the
Cushions on the couch.
My boss’s wife is named Theresa
But I’ve never to this day found you.

An incredibly beautiful and sensitive write which I have nominated for poem of the day.
