poem II

by Gail Wolper

now it is common
to marry a person
to which it would
once have been forbidden
~
to see a mother
with children
which seem not to belong to her
~
the waitress' name is Maria
so to her I speak Spanish
~
yet she is Filipina
and becomes confused
~
the girl at the front desk
is a dark beauty and a college student
~
once, as a nurse
i saw a new mother who was black, very dark
and her newborn
was a pale blonde
~
no matter what
she would not let go
