You Can Only Run As Fast As Your DNA Allows

by Jersey D Gibson

Did you hear the news today?
Another murder-suicide grips primetime.
Politics is running the show,
choose what makes us look the best.

Did you see the headlines today?
Another war is being waged right now.
A tragedy when lives equals numbers,
and the defense budget exceeds the education one.

Did you feel the calamity today?
Another traffic jam caused by a cell phone.
A thousand distractions to take us away,
a thousand pills to help us forget.

Did you touch on the problem today?
Another man gave up on his family.
Seeking out for something better,
never thinking that Karma likes to stalk.

Did you taste the flavor today?
Another technological advancement to blind us.
Inject our lives with social media,
do you know the name of your neighbors?

Strange how we seem to prefer abstraction to actual human contact, and how even in the bloodless abstract everything continues to be a bloody mess. But, yes, I do know my neighbors' names--and not because they "friended" me.

Excellent quest for answers. The first time I read it I had to admit to myself I don't know the neighbors names where I currently reside, but I did give a little boy a slice o watermelon when he saw my grandchildren with one. I used to keep up with the news but got out of the habit when it became almost unavailable to receive it. Truthfully I'm not up to more negative input right now. Maybe it will improve soon. Thanks for sharing.
